We’ve all been there. You check tomorrow’s workout and see it’s Goat Day. Ugh. You wanted to lift, right?
Maybe you think about skipping.
What is Goat Day anyway?
Goats are the things we’re not good at and don’t like doing. They’re harder moves that take time to get better at. You might think they’re not for you. It’s the exercise that shows up, and you just don’t want to do it.
Everyone has a goat, and probably more than one. Think about it, and you can list your goats. Yours could be double-unders, handstand push-ups, rope climbs, muscle-ups, or a lift like the overhead squat or snatch. Most of us don’t spend time working on things we’re not good at because it’s not fun. But our coaches know we need to work on our goats. CrossFit is about being ready for anything, so we need to turn our weaknesses into strengths or at least get better at them!
It’s up to you to work on your goat. Use the time the coaches give you to practice. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. You must keep working on these moves, even outside of Goat Day. Use your coaches’ knowledge, ask them questions, tell them what you struggle with. Come 15 minutes early, or stay 15 minutes late a few days a week to keep practicing until you feel better at it. Then, pick a new goat!
To be a better athlete and a better person, find your weaknesses, make a plan (Goal Review sessions are great at this), and work on them regularly. We learn more by working on what we’re bad at than by doing what we’re already good at.
You are only as strong as your weakest goat!
